Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with soccer: Kylian Mbappé starred for France as the two-time World Cup champions defeated Sweden 3-0 in New Jersey to set up a last 16 tie with Paraguay. Mbappé scored twice, moving one behind Argentina’s Lionel Messi on the tournament’s all-time leading scorer list. In Dallas, Norway sealed a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast and will face five-time champions Brazil in a mouth-watering last-16 showdown. Co-hosts Mexico defeated Ecuador 2-0 and will take on either England or the Democratic Republic of Congo in the round of 16.
Julian Nagelsman meanwhile wants to stay on as Germany’s coach despite the four-time champion being eliminated during the round of 32. Their unexpected demise to Paraguay was the first time Germany ever lost a penalty shoot-out at a World Cup. Nagelsman’s contract stretches to the European Championship of 2028, but he is under pressure, with former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp touted as a possible replacement. Nagelsman says he has a lot of quality young players in the squad for the road ahead.
# Rugby: Young Sharks flyhalf Luan Giliomee will wear the Junior Boks’ number ten jersey in tomorrow’s Junior World Championship match against hosts Georgia. He was moved from fullback, while another prodigy, the Stormers’ Markus Muller, comes in on inside centre. Coach Kevin Foote rung the changes after his charges thrashed Uruguay 104-7 in their opening game on Saturday, with only four players of that squad remaining. Giliomee and Muller were on the bench against Uruguay.
# Cricket: Six-time champion Australia is back in the T20 Women’s World Cup final for the first time in three years, after thrashing the West Indies by eight wickets at the Oval. The Windies were restricted to 125 for seven. Beth Mooney then scored an unbeaten 61 from 36 balls, as Australia reached the target with seven overs to spare. Australia will now face either South Africa or England in Sunday’s final at Lord’s. Monney says making another final is special:
# And lastly, tennis: Twenty-three-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams suffered defeat in the first round at Wimbledon in her first singles match in nearly four years. The American lost to Australia’s Maya Joint. Poland’s Iga Swiatek began her title defence with victory over American Taylor Townsend. In the men’s draw, French Open champion Alexander Zverev of Germany won against Belgian debutant Alexander Blockx. American fourth seed Ben Shelton suffered a five-set defeat to Finland’s Otto Virtanen.
