Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with cricket: South Africa is batting first after stand-in captain Dean Elgar won the toss in the second and final Test against India in Cape Town. The Proteas are hoping for a series win at Newlands after defeating the visitors by an innings in the first encounter in Centurion. Indian captain Rohit Sharma said earlier his team’s young batters will simply have to find a way to cope with South Africa’s challenging conditions. India earlier won the one-day series 2-1, while the T20s ended in a 1-all draw.
More news about the sport is that Pakistan chose to bat under sunny skies in the third test against Australia in Sydney. After losing both openers for ducks, the visitors recovered well to post 313, with 80’s for Mohammad Rizwan and Aamer Jamal, while Aussie captain Pat Cummins picked up five wickets. The home-side then ended day one on six without loss, with David Warner batting in his final Test before retirement. Cummins hopes the 37-year-old gets a good send-off:
# Soccer: West Ham United missed out on a fourth successive Premier League victory as the festive fixtures concluded with a drab 0-0 draw at home to Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday. Brighton would have moved above West Ham into sixth place with a victory, but chances were few and far between at the London Stadium with a draw a fair outcome. The draw leaves them in sixth spot with 34 points from 20 games. Brighton has now moved above Manchester United into seventh on goal difference with 31 points.
Transfer news is that Kylian Mbappé and his possible move to Real Madrid is expected to be the key theme of the transfer window that opens in Europe on Monday. Much attention will focus on Mbappé, who a year ago scored a hat-trick for France in the World Cup final only to finish on the losing side. Real Madrid are again the main suitor for the 25-year-old. It’s far from certain though, as the French are passionate about Mbappé. President Emmanuel Macron in June 2022 persuade him to stay at Paris Saint-Germain when a move to Real seemed certain.
# And we end with exciting darts news: The 16-year-old sensation Luke Littler produced another stunning display to reach the World Championship final. The teenager from Warrington beat 2018 winner Rob Cross 6-2 to move within one victory of becoming the youngest world champion in history. Littler, the youngest-ever player to reach the decider, will face fellow Englishman Luke Humphries in tonight’s final. If he wins it will be one of the greatest sporting stories of all time, which would rival Emma Raducanu winning the US Open tennis tournament in 2021 when she was 18.
