Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with fantastic athletics news: Two of South Africa’s Olympic silver medallists continued their brilliant form at the World Athletics Under 20 Championships in Lima, Peru. Bayana Walaza clinch gold and Bradley Nkoana bronze in the men’s 100-metre. Walaza finished in 10.19 seconds, while Thailand’s Puripol Boonson won silver. Walaza and Nkoana were part of the four-by-100-metre relay team that finished second at the Games in Paris earlier this month. Another South African, Johannes Morepe, has booked his spot in the men’s one-thousand-500-metre final in Lima.
# Rugby: New Zealand head coach Scott Robertson has made two changes to his starting lineup for their Rugby Championship Test against South Africa at Ellis Park on Saturday. Captain Scott Barrett, who has been out with a finger injury, is back and replaces Sam Darry, with former captain Sam Cane coming in for Dalton Papali’i. This will be Cane’s 97th Test. Robertson says to play the Springboks at Ellis Park is one of the greatest tests they can prepare for, and they will embrace the occasion.
# Cricket: The Proteas Women and Pakistan will face off in a three-match T20 series next month as they prepare for the World Cup, starting in the United Arab Emirates early in October. The matches will be played in Multan from the 16th to the 20th. The Proteas will then travel to the UAE where they will face the Windies on the fourth of October, followed by group matches against England, Scotland and Bangladesh. The final takes place on the 20th.
# Boxing: Parliament’s portfolio committee on Sports, Arts and Culture has called for a forensic investigation into the affairs of Boxing South Africa. Litigation in the matter of former CEO Moffat Qithi cost the BSA 12-million-rand, which also resulted in it owing the South African Revenue Services 4.5-million-rand. Its budget was also exhausted in December, three months before the end of the financial year. The committee has resolved that in 21 days Sports minister Gayton McKenzie will present a plan of action as an initial step in improving BSA’s situation.
# And, tennis: Defending champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia is into the third round of the US Open after his countryman Laslo Djere retired injured early in the third set. Djokovic won the first two sets. American Taylor Fritz dispatched Italian Matteo Berrettini in straight sets while Norwegian Casper Ruud saw off France’s Gael Monfils. In the women’s draw, defending champion Coco Gauff of the US beat Germany’s Tatjana Maria 6-4, 6-love, while Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic fell to Romanian qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse.
