# We start with news from the Olympic Games: Three South African swimmers are trying for medals in Paris tonight. Tatjana Smith and her training partner, Kaylene Corbett, are through to the women’s 200-metre breaststroke final. Smith, who finished second in her semifinal, is a step closer to completing a golden double after winning the 100-metre breaststroke. Corbett also finished second in her semifinal. Pieter Coetzé booked his spot in the men’s 200-metre backstroke final after finishing second in the semifinal.
The South African men’s hockey team has been eliminated when suffering a three-nil defeat to Spain. The women’s side lost two-one to Britain. Meanwhile, Rio 2016 bronze medallist Henri Schoeman finished 20th and James Riddle 25th in the men’s individual triathlon, which Britain’s Alex Lee won. Vicky van der Merwe finished 46th in the women’s race. In rowing, London gold medallist John Smith and Christopher Baxter finished fourth in the men’s pair semifinal, while Paige Badenhorst will fight for 13th to 18th place overall on Saturday.
# Rugby: Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt has included six uncapped players in his 36-man squad for their opening two Rugby Championship Tests against the Springboks in Brisbane and Perth. The uncapped players include Olympic sevens star Corey Toole and Japan-based Marika Koroibete. Angus Bell and 19-year-old Max Jorgensen have both been recalled after missing parts of the Super Rugby season due to injury. Flyhalf Tom Lynach, who made his debut for the Wallabies last month, says it’s an honour to represent Australia:
# Cricket: A West Indies invitational eleven will resume its first innings on 245 for six in the warm-up match against the Proteas, who are preparing for the first of two Tests against the Windies. South Africa won the toss in Trinidad and Tobago and chose to bowl. Opener Jeremy Solozano top-scored with 111, while pace bowler Kagiso Rabada picked up three wickets. Rabada says he loves being in the West Indies:
# And finally, soccer: The English Premier League has fined reigning champions Manchester City 48.07-million-rand for delaying the kick-off or restart of matches. There were 22 separate breaches over the last two seasons, with eight coming during the 2022/’23 campaign and 14 last season. City has apologised for the breaches. The league says rules relating to kick-offs and restarts help ensure the organisation of the competition is set at the highest possible professional standard and provides certainty to fans and participating clubs.
