Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has confirmed that nine players will be missing for their one-off Test against Wales and the first of the two Tests against Ireland due to injuries. They include international regulars Steven Kitshoff, Lood de Jager, Canan Moodie, Damian Willemse, and Kurt-Lee Arendse. Erasmus says winger Cheslin Kolbe is touch and go for the Wales Test:
Meanwhile, Erasmus says Pieter-Steph du Toit, Eben Etzebeth, and Bongi Mbonambi are the frontrunners to captain the team against Wales at Twickenham next weekend. Siya Kolisi is unavailable for the Test as it falls outside the official Test window, and his French club Racing 92 is not obligated to release him for international duty. Erasmus says a permanent decision on the captaincy would be taken ahead of the two-match Ireland series next month:
# Golf: Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy and American Patrick Cantlay both registered a five-under 65 to share the opening-round lead at the US Open in North Carolina. Debutant Ludvig Åberg of Sweden is a shot back in third. World number one Scottie Scheffler of the US finished one-over 71, while three-time champion Tiger Woods ended at four over par. McIlroy, who is aiming for a fifth major title, says he played a controlled round:
# Cricket: Defending champions England beat Oman by eight wickets, to boost their hopes of qualifying for the T20 World Cup super eight stage. Mark Wood, Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid starred with the ball as Oman was bowled out for just 47 runs. In reply, captain Jos Buttler scored an unbeaten 24 as England reached the target in 3.1 overs, the quickest run chase in T20 World Cup history. England will qualify for the next round on net run-rate if they beat Namibia and Scotland lose to Australia this weekend.
# And finally, Tennis: Wimbledon has announced an increase of almost 12-percent in prize money to 1.173-billion-rand, with the singles champions taking home just under 63.4-million-rand each. The organisers also increased the prize money for the wheelchair events by 35-percent to 23.5-million-rand. The chairperson of the All England Club in London, Debbie Jevans, says their profits go back into the sport, but they also give a lot to the players. Wimbledon starts on the first of next month.
