Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We kick off with rugby: Winger Cheslin Kolbe has rejoined the Springbok training camp in Pretoria, with an eye on possibly being available for selection for the Tests against Ireland next month. The double World Cup winner injured his knee during the Japanese club season. He will now do his rehabilitation under the supervision of the Bok medical staff. The match-day squad for the opening Test of the season, against Wales at Twickenham next weekend, will be announced on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, DStv has announced its riveting series about the Springboks’ second successive World Cup triumph will be available to all subscrivers over the long weekend. The five-part series, Chasing the Sun Two – A Story for South Africa, will be broadcast on SuperSport Variety and Mzansi Wethu from Saturday until Monday. One of the executive producers, SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha, says sharing the story with a wider audience is part of the essence of making the series truly feel like a story for South Africa.
# Cricket: The West Indies are through to the Super Eight round of the T20 World Cup after defeating New Zealand by 13 runs in Trinidad. Sherfane Rutherford scored an unbeaten 68 as the co-hosts posted 149 for nine. Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph then took four wickets and left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie three and the Black Caps finished on 136 for nine. New Zealand must now beat Uganda and Papua New Guinea in their remaining games and hope other results go their way.
# Golf: Three-time champion Tiger Woods says he is confident he can win the US Open. The American returns to action for the first time since missing the cut at the PGA Championship last month. He has played a limited schedule due to injury in recent years. Woods believes he still has the game to contend for the majors, but says simply reaching the weekend and finishing all four rounds would be a big step in the right direction:
# And finally, Olympics: French Open champions Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal have been named in the Spanish team for the Paris Games. World number two Alcaraz last weekend won his first Roland Garros title on clay in Paris, where the Olympic tournament will take place from 27 July to 4 August. In addition to the singles tournament, Alcaraz and Nadal may also take part in the Games’ doubles event.
