Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, we have rugby: The Springboks are busy with a training camp in Pretoria ahead of their first Test of the season against Wales at Twickenham in London next Saturday. The match falls outside the international window, so clubs are not obligated to release their international stars. Players based in Europe are therefore not available. Bok coach Rassie Erasmus says it is a good opportunity to build depth in the squad:
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana beat Zimbabwe three-one at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein to take control of their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. Goals from Iqraam Rayners and a second-half brace from Thapelo Morena secured the victory. The victory takes South Africa to second place in Group C, tied on seven points with Rwanda who are top due to a better goal difference. Coach Hugo Broos is happy with how the qualifying campaign is going:
# Cricket: South Africa has qualified for the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup after Sri Lanka’s match against Nepal in Florida, was abandoned without a ball being bowled because of rain. With three wins out of three matches, the Proteas lead Group D with six points, while Bangladesh and the Netherlands have two points each from two games. South Africa’s final group game is against Nepal in Kingstown on Saturday.
Australia has also qualified for the final eight after beating Namibia by nine wickets in Antigua and Barbuda today. Spinner Adam Zampa took four wickets as Namibia was bowled out for 72. Zampa has become the first Australian to take 100 T20 international wickets. In reply, Travis Head top-scored with an unbeaten 34, as Australia reached the target in the sixth over.
# And finally, golf: World number one Scottie Scheffler of the US has been grouped alongside compatriot Xander Schauffele and Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy for the first two rounds of the 124th US Open, starting tomorrow. American Wyndham Clark, who edged out McIlroy last year, begins his title defence alongside compatriots Brian Harman and Nick Dunlap. Three-time winner Tiger Woods will tee off with Will Zalatoris of the US and 2022 champion Matt Fitzpatrick of England. McIlroy says it’s exciting to be a part of a marquee group:
