# We start with rugby: Blitzbok captain Selvyn Davids says they are heading with optimism into the Grand Final of the Sevens Series in Spain this weekend. Only the top eight men’s and women’s teams will compete in Madrid. After seven rounds, Argentina and New Zealand were named men’s and women’s league winners, before the new stand-alone tournament in the Spanish capital. South Africa will face Ireland, New Zealand, and Fiji in the group stage. Davids says their performances in the last two tournaments gave them confidence:
More rugby news: Bulls winger Sebastian de Klerk says they plan to play an expansive United Rugby Championship game against the Sharks on Saturday. In the final round of the URC, the Bulls will be looking to wrap up the battle for the South African Shield, while claiming a top-two finish. The Pretoria team conceded a combined 69 points in the last two games against Glasgow Warriors and Benetton at home, but De Klerk says they are happy with the way they have defended this season.
# Tennis: Defending champion Iga Swiatek saved a match point on her way to victory over Naomi Osaka of Japan in the second round of the French Open. The 22-year-old Pole won in three sets. There were also victories for American Coco Gauff and Tunisian Ons Jabeur. In the men’s draw, Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz defeated Dutch qualifier Jesper de Jong in four sets, while Italian Jannik Sinner dispatched of French veteran Richard Gasquet in straight sets. Swiatek says the match was tough:
# Boxing: Oleksandr Usyk will face Tyson Fury of Britain in a rematch in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on 21 December after winning their undisputed heavyweight boxing bout earlier this month. The undefeated Ukrainian won by split decision against Fury in the first unification fight of the four-belt era. Thirty-seven-year-old Usyk, who briefly served as a soldier after the Russian invasion, was also undisputed champion at cruiserweight and won Olympic, world and European honours as an amateur.
# And finally, golf: Charges have been dropped against world number one Scottie Scheffler after his arrest in Louisville during the PGA Championship. The American had been charged with second-degree assault of a police official, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an official. Jefferson County attorney Mike O’Connell says after reviewing the evidence he found that Scheffler’s actions did not satisfy the elements of any criminal offence. Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, says the 27-year-old will not file a civil lawsuit:
