Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# Cricket: The DA has threatened to report Cricket South Africa to the Human Rights Commission unless the Under-19 team captain, David Teeger, is reinstated ahead of the World Cup. Teeger was stripped of his duties due to fears that he could be targeted by protesters over his pro-Israel views. Last month, Teeger was cleared of wrongdoing after praising Israeli soldiers at an award ceremony. The DA contends his removal violates the Bill of Rights, deeming the decision misguided. The World Cup tournament begins on Friday.
Meanwhile, Cricket South Africa says it is not punishing Teeger for being Jewish but only wants to protect him. Teeger remains in the Under19 World Cup squad but Western Province all-rounder Juan James has taken over the captaincy. The CSA board chairperson, Lawson Naidoo, says they want the World Cup to go ahead without disruptions.
# Rugby: Cheetahs captain Victor Sekekete says ill-discipline and a loss of focus cost them the win against Pau in Amsterdam. The Bloemfontein side went down by 20-33 against the French side in their European Challenge Cup match yesterday. A win for the Cheetahs would have essentially sealed their passage into the playoffs. This victory for Pau has resurrected their hopes of qualifying for the round of 16. Sekekete says they now need to refocus for their next game against Oyonnax in France:
# Golf: England’s Tommy Fleetwood birdied the final two holes to win the Dubai Invitational by one shot over Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy and South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence. McIlroy headed into the final hole with a one-shot lead, however, his tee shot on the final hole found the water. The Englishman sunk the incredible 4.8-metre birdie to claim victory. Lawrence finished alongside McIlroy at 18 under. Fleetwood says it was important to remain focused, especially on the last two holes:
# And tennis: Defending champion Novak Djokovic survived a huge first-round scare to remain on target for an eleventh Australian Open title and record-breaking 25th Grand Slam. In just over four hours, the Serb defeated 18-year-old qualifier Dino Prizmic of Croatia, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, in Melbourne. American Taylor Fritz and Russia’s Andrey Rublev escaped a five-set scare in their respective matches to advance to the second round. Djokovic was full of praise for Prizmic, who is ranked 178 in the world:
