# The Civil Society Working Group on State Capture calls on president Cyril Ramaphosa to strengthen the law on appointing the next National Director of Public Prosecutions. The organisation, including the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse, said the Zondo commission on state capture, recommended changes to the National Prosecuting Authority Act to ensure a more transparent selection process. With NDPP Shamila Batohi’s term ending in January, they say a clear and robust process will improve accountability while preserving the president’s power to appoint intact.
# ANC chief whip Mdumiseni Ntuli has defended the party against claims that it was funded by suspected criminal syndicate boss Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. During Matlala’s testimony at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Tshwane, Ntuli says businessman Brown Mogotsi cannot represent the ANC, and any money linked to Matlala going to Mogotsi does not mean it funded the party’s January 8 event. He called the allegations a misinterpretation of the Matlala-Mogotsi relationship:
# National Coloured Congress Member of Parliament Fadiel Adams has laid criminal charges against KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and former Police minister Bheki Cele, calling for a fraud and corruption investigation. This follows allegations at Parliament’s ad hoc committee hearing at Pretoria’s Kgoši Mampuru Prison that Cele received a 500-thousand-rand bribe from tenderpreneur Vusimusi ‘Cat’ Matlala, who also met Mkhwanazi over payment delays. Adams, previously implicated by Mkhwanazi for mishandling intelligence, has also opened a nepotism case against national police commissioner Fannie Masemola.
# A woman was killed and a man seriously injured by a shark at a popular beach in Australia. The attack took place at Crowdy Bay National Park north of Sydney when the pair went for an early morning swim. The woman died at the scene, while the man was airlifted to hospital in critical condition. Experts say it is rare for a shark to attack more than one person. The beach has been closed as authorities work to determine the species of shark involved.
