# The expelled MK Party founder is barred from Parliament’s first sitting
# A criminologist says more needs to be done to deal with corruption within law enforcement
# And Olympics: A table tennis player becomes the first Brazilian to compete in the Olympics as well as the Paralympics
# The secretary of Parliament, Xolile George, has informed expelled MK Party founder Jabulani Khumalo he cannot attend the first sitting of the National Assembly on Friday. George cited correspondence from the MK Party outlining the internal processes followed in removing Khumalo from their parliamentary list. This comes after Khumalo stated his intention to attend despite the party’s decision to boycott the first proceedings due to dissatisfaction with the election results.
Meanwhile, the National Freedom Party has expressed enthusiasm to participate in the formation of a government of national unity, and appreciates the invitation from the ANC to join the negotiations. Embracing the transition to the seventh administration, the NFP looks forward to the first sitting of the National Assembly. Party leader Ivan Barnes says the NFP is committed to good governance, respect for the Constitution, and eliminating fraud and corruption:
# A criminologist, professor Jaco Barkhuizen, says the problem with corruption within law enforcement is the effect on trust in the police, which is very low. Two Tshwane Metro police officials have been fired for terrorising the Centurion community in Pretoria. Their dismissals follow numerous complaints from residents. Barkhuizen says it is a positive sign that something is being done about corrupt law enforcement officials, but a lot more needs to be done.
# Malawi is in mourning as vice-president Saulos Klaus Chilima and nine others have died in a military aircraft crash. President Lazarus Chakwera confirmed the news during a media briefing after the wreckage of the plane was discovered in Chikangawa Forest in Mzimba. Chilima and the others were en route to represent the government at the burial of former cabinet minister Ralph Kasambara. Chakwera extended his condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims:
# Olympics: Brazilian table tennis player Bruna Alexandra is set to become the first athlete from the country to participate in the Olympic as well as Paralympic Games. The 29-year-old lost her right arm after sustaining a blood clot when she was a few months old, but started playing the sport at the age of seven. Alexandra won two bronze medals at the Rio Paralympics in 2016, and silver and bronze in Tokyo. South Africans Natalie du Toit and Oscar Pistorius earlier also competed in both Games.
