In this bulletin:
# Jacob Zuma’s lawyers claim the MK Party dispute is marred by allegations of perjury and criminality
# RISE Mzansi calls for resources to assist flood victims in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro
# And cricket: South Africa faces Sri Lanka in the T20 World Cup and Namibia beats Oman in a super over
# Former president Jacob Zuma has alleged criminal conduct and perjury in the MK Party’s leadership dispute. His legal counsel claims false statements and unauthorised actions by founder Jabulani Khumalo, who is challenging his expulsion from the party in the High Court in Johannesburg. Presenting his arguments before the Electoral Court, Zuma’s lawyer Dali Mpofu says the MK Party leadership, including Zuma himself and his daughter Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, have been defamed through fabricated stories:
Meanwhile, the controversial diamond dealer Louis Liebenberg has lost his 40-thousand-rand deposit after a dismal performance in the elections. News24 reports, running as an independent on a platform of sharing South Africa’s mineral wealth, Liebenberg secured only one-thousand-422 votes nationwide. Despite his ties to Zuma, to whom he has donated over three-million-rand for legal costs, he garnered just 0.04-percent of the vote in the Free State and 0.03-percent in Gauteng. His company, Tariomix, was liquidated last month, leading to raids on his properties.
# RISE Mzansi has called for adequate resources to assist over one-thousand-400 people affected by floods in Gqeberha and Kariega in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. The party expressed condolences to the families of the seven victims. Spokesperson Gugu Ndima urged the national government to adequately provide humanitarian support to displaced families:
# The Automobile Association is forecasting significant fuel price decreases for June, providing relief after steady increases since February. Unaudited data indicates a decrease of around one-rand-six-cents-per-litre for 95 and 93 unleaded petrol, one-rand-per-litre for diesel, and 80-cents-per-litre for illuminating paraffin. The AA says this is driven by lower international product prices aided by a stronger rand-US dollar exchange rate in May. The AA has reiterated calls for a review of the fuel pricing mechanism to permanently mitigate rising costs.
# Cricket: South Africa gets its T20 Word Cup campaign going against Sri Lanka in New York this afternoon. The match starts at 4.30, South African time. Earlier today, neighbours Namibia beat Oman in the super over of their encounter in Bridgetown, Barbados. Oman were bowled out for 109 after Ruben Trumpelmann took four wickets and David Wiese three. The African team reached 109 for six. Namibia then scored 21 without loss in the super over and restricted the Middle Eastern team to 10 for one.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-67-cents and the euro at 20-rand-25-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-77-cents and Bitcoin trades at 69-thousand-227-dollars-19-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-326-dollars-69-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 81-dollars-15-cents a barrel.
