In this bulletin:
# Parliament plans to summon minister Tolashe over allegations of violating financial laws
# A luxury Russian yacht is allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz
# And soccer: Modric’s World Cup is in doubt after he fractured his cheekbone
# The chairperson of Parliament’s Social Development committee, Bridget Masango, has confirmed that minister Sisisi Tolashe will be summoned to respond to allegations of violating financial laws. Reports claim a state-paid worker was used for private duties and forced to share her salary with a family member. Masango says, if true, this would violate public trust. She says the committee will request a full briefing from the Department of Social Development.
# Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi and city manager Kagiso Lerutla have been granted bail at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court in Gauteng. The pair face charges of fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice over an alleged 2019 plot to hire a third party to impersonate Lerutla over a traffic offence. Magistrate Emmanuel Magampa postponed the case to 13 May and ordered them to surrender their passports:
# Officials are currently on site at munitions manufacturer Denel in Macassar, Cape Town, after a fire broke out this morning. The city’s Fire and Rescue Service dispatched crews from Macassar and Khayelitsha, along with an incident management team, to assist Denel’s fire crews in extinguishing the blaze. Disaster management spokesperson Sonica Lategan says emergency medical services also responded, with no injuries reported. She says the incident was contained on site:
Moving abroad:
# It emerged that a superyacht linked to sanctioned Russian billionaire Alexey Mordashov sailed through the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend. The 142-meter vessel worth over 8.27-billion-rand, the Nord, left a Dubai marina on Friday, crossed the strait on Saturday morning, and arrived in Muscat on Sunday. It is one of very few vessels to transit the blockaded shipping lane at the heart of the US-Iranian conflict. Just a few, mainly merchant vessels, have been passing daily through the waterway as Washington and Tehran maintain a blockade.
# Soccer: Croatia and AC Milan’s captain, Luka Modric’s World Cup is in doubt after fracturing his cheekbone during Sunday’s Serie A match against Juventus. He clashed heads with the opponents’ midfielder, Manuel Locatelli, and underwent a successful operation later. Croatia’s governing body says the 40-year-old veteran of four World Cups will do everything possible to be fit for this year’s tournament in Northern America, starting on 11 June. Croatia will face England, Ghana and Panama in Group L.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-58-cents and the euro at 19-rand-39-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-36-cents and Bitcoin trades at 76-thousand-283-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-599-dollars-51-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 104-dollars-50-cents a barrel.
