In this bulletin:
# The DA’s Daylin Mitchell is elected as speaker of the Western Cape Legislature
# Jabulani Khumalo demands his reinstatement to the MK Party’s parliamentary list
# And rugby: Chasing the Sun 2 is available for all DStv subscribers this long weekend
# The DA’s Daylin Mitchell has been elected speaker of the Western Cape legislature. Acting Western Cape Judge President Patricia Goliath announced Mitchell received 26 votes, defeating the ANC’s Ayanda Bans, who received 12 votes, with three spoilt ballots. Mitchell was first elected as speaker in 2022. In his acceptance speech, he elaborated his commitment to ensure the provincial legislature is the best parliament in Africa:
# Expelled MK Party founder Jabulani Khumalo has filed an urgent application with the Western Cape High Court to be reinstated on the party’s parliamentary list. The court is hearing the case a day before the first sitting of the National Assembly. This comes after the Electoral Court dismissed Khumalo’s bid to be reinstated as party leader. Khumalo’s legal counsel, Mfesane Ka-Siboto, says Khumalo attempted to contact former president Jacob Zuma to understand his expulsion:
# The Food and Allied Workers’ Union is appaled by the explosion at Nova Feeds factory in Malmesbury, which killed one member and hospitalised two others this week. FAWU general-secretary Mayoyo Mngomezulu urged the Department of Labour to investigate the incident thoroughly. Mngomezulu emphasises the importance of workplace health and safety to prevent such tragedies. He also calls for counselling for affected employees.
# Media24 will close several iconic print publications in October, including City Press, Daily Sun, Rapport, and Beeld. According to a report by Moneyweb, the only remaining print publication will be Die Burger in Cape Town. This decision comes as print media now accounts for just over six-percent of overall advertisement spend, with digital making up about 40-percent. Financial losses, rising distribution costs, declining advertising revenue, and a shift to online readership have apparently driven this move.
# Rugby: DStv has announced its riveting series about the Springboks’ second successive World Cup triumph will be available to all subscrivers over the long weekend. The five-part series, Chasing the Sun Two – A Story for South Africa, will be broadcast on SuperSport Variety and Mzansi Wethu from Saturday until Monday. One of the executive producers, SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha, says sharing the story with a wider audience is part of the essence of making the series truly feel like a story for South Africa.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-37-cents and the euro at 19-rand-84-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-48-cents and Bitcoin trades at 67-thousand-876-dollars-34-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-313-dollars-83-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 82-dollars-7-cents a barrel.
