# President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for continued economic reforms to boost growth and job creation in the seventh Parliament. In his weekly newsletter, he emphasised maintaining reform momentum post-elections, regardless of the new administration’s composition. Ramaphosa says significant progress has been made in energy, water, and logistics under Operation Vulindlela, enhancing investor confidence despite challenges like load-shedding. He highlights private sector involvement in infrastructure and visa regime improvements. Ramaphosa urges political parties and society to collaborate in driving economic transformation and reducing unemployment for sustainable growth.
Meanwhile, several political parties have asked Chief Justice Raymond Zondo to appoint a retired judge to facilitate talks on forming a government of national unity. The parties include the UDM, ACDP, and Build One South Africa. UDM’s Yongaba Zigebe stresses the need for clarity with regards to the formation of the new Parliament:
#The Institute for Security Studies believes South Africa has the necessary skills and resources to improve policing and safety. The institute says with committed leadership from the president and Police minister, reforms could lead to a motivated and trusted police service, reduced crime rates, and increased public safety. It says practical steps include overhauling recruitment, enhancing integrity, and focusing on major offenders. Such changes could restore public trust and make South Africa safer. The institute will launch the detailed recommendations to transform the country’s safety trajectory on June 27.
# The City of Cape Town says it has seen an increase in its contractors and service delivery staff being victimised by extortionists and construction mafia syndicates. The number of escorts provided to city departments and contractors increased from 759 in nine months in 2022/23, to one-thousand-292 during the same period in the current financial year, representing a 70-percent increase. Mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says 105 cases have been registered with the police since January last year:
# Rugby: The Bulls duo of Kurt-Lee Arendse and Cameron Hanekom are up against the Lions’ versatile Sanele Nohamba for South Africa’s coveted United Rugby Championship Player of the Season Award for 2024. The Gauteng-based trio garnered the most votes in the nomination process, with Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus, the four South African franchises and local media selecting their star players of the season. The winner will be announced next Tuesday as part of the URC Awards for the season.
