BULLETIN 10 June 2 pm
Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# ANC leaders are to interview premier candidates in key provinces
# Minister Barbara Creecy calls for the reduction of marine pollution through sustainable practices
# And the public are urged to support Bafana Bafana in their World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe
# The ANC’s top officials, including president Cyril Ramaphosa, will interview potential premiers for provinces where the party won majorities or lead coalitions. Excluding the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, the interviews will follow the party’s guidelines, with ANC Electoral Committee chairperson Kgalema Motlanthe as an observer. The final candidates will be announced ahead of provincial legislature sessions on 17 and 18 June to elect new leaders.
Meanwhile, the Azanian People’s Organisation is calling upon the nation to go back to the drawing board and reengineer itself through a national forum. AZAPO’s spokesperson, Jabu Rakwena, says there is no party that got an outright majority to govern with a clear mandate. He says any coalition or government of national unity would be corrupting the will of the people and driven by narrow, self-serving and self-preservation interests, that would spell disaster for the poor whose voice shall remain in the wilderness:
# Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment minister, Barbara Creecy, has urged citizens to play their part in minimising marine pollution by adopting sustainable practices. These include reducing littering, participating in beach clean-ups, and recycling materials. Oceans influence weather patterns, support diverse ecosystems, and provide livelihoods for millions of people worldwide, including 40-percent of South Africa’s population residing within 100 kilometres of the coastline. Creecy says much of the world’s oceans remain unexplored, emphasising the need for increased awareness and conservation efforts.
# Soccer: Acting minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Maropene Ramokgopa, urges South Africans to support Bafana Bafana and fill up the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein tomorrow. South Africa will take on Zimbabwe in a World Cup qualifier. Group C is wide open, with just three points separating leaders Lesotho from bottom-of-the-log Zimbabwe. The department’s spokesperson, Litha Mpondwana, says this is the first time Bafana Bafana will play in Bloemfontein since 2010:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-74-cents and the euro at 20-rand-13-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-79-cents and Bitcoin trades at 69-thousand-422-dollars-30-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-297-dollars-25-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 79-dollars-72-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The sardine run has begun, with the first big net hauls reported on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast. Hibberdene and Lucien Beach near Margate saw the first catches. This natural phenomenon benefits residents and fish businesses and attracts predators like whales and sharks, as well as international visitors. The shoal is expected to head towards Durban, depending on wind and currents. Meanwhile beaches in Amanzimtoti and surrounds have been closed for swimming as a result of the sardine run and the associated shark activity around the shoal.
