Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Suliman Carrim’s testimony before the Madlanga commission is postponed to July 15
# Israel and Lebanon discuss a pilot scheme to hand over territory
# And rugby: Faf de Klerk will lead the Barbarians against Wales
# The chairperson of the Madlanga commission, Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, has postponed the testimony of North West businessman Suliman Carrim to 15 July. He was due to testify today, but his legal team informed the commission his health remains a concern. Carrim has previously missed scheduled appearances after being declared medically unfit to testify. Evidence leader Matthew Chaskalson emphasised the commission will seek further information from Carrim’s medical team before proceeding:
# The Impact Forum has lodged a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission against the Department of Home Affairs following a stakeholder engagement on the Zimbabwe and Lesotho exemption permit programmes. The organisation claims the rights and freedom of expression of its representative were violated during last week’s meeting. The forum’s president, Rollence Mabula, says they will continue to pursue all available avenues to promote fairness:
# The DA in the Western Cape says visible law enforcement and proactive interventions are essential as schools increasingly become targets for vandalism and theft. The provincial Education Department has expanded holiday security support from 424 schools last winter to 453 high-risk schools for this holidays. The DA’s Peter Johnson says 11.9-million-rand has been allocated for holiday security in the 2026/27 financial year, despite crime prevention remaining primarily the police’s responsibility:
Moving abroad:
# Lebanon and Israel are discussing a US-backed proposal for Israeli forces to transfer some of the Lebanese territory invaded in their war with Hezbollah to Lebanon’s military. The proposed pilot project is part of the latest round of Israeli-Lebanese talks in Washington, even after they appear to have been eclipsed by Iran’s move to make Lebanon central to its talks with the United States. Israeli forces occupied a swathe of southern Lebanon during the war that was ignited when Hezbollah opened fire at Israel in support of Tehran.
# Rugby: South Africa’s World Cup-winning scrum-half, Faf de Klerk, will captain the Barbarians when they face Wales at Twickenham on Saturday. He takes over the role from New Zealander TJ Perenara. The strong squad features 19 Test-capped players from eleven different nations. De Klerk scored a try off the bench as the Springboks triumphed over the BaaBaas in Gqeberha last weekend. Head coach Scott Robertson says it’s great to have a player of his quality and experience leading the group this week.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-54-cents and the euro at 18-rand-78-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-79-cents and Bitcoin trades at 61-thousand-515-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-984-dollars-11-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 72-dollars-93-cents a barrel.
