# EFF leader Julius Malema has rejected the proposal by the ANC for suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department head, Julius Mkhwanazi, to submit a written statement and not appear before Parliament’s ad hoc committee. At the Madlanga commission of inquiry, Mkhwanazi was accused of leading an alleged rogue unit implicated in serious crimes, including murder. Malema says Mkhwanazi has a case to answer and must appear before the committee:
# The agriculture organisation, TLU SA, says farmers are bracing for another season of above-average rainfall. According to the Seasonal Climate Watch issued by the South African Weather Service, above-normal rainfall is anticipated for the north-eastern regions of the country this summer. Parts of Mpumalanga and Limpopo are expected to receive below-normal rainfall during this period. TLU SA’s Bennie Van Zyl says as long as the farmers get adequate rain at the right time, they will get profits at the end of the season:

# French president Emmanuel Macron says US counterpart Donald Trump’s peace plan needs improvement to make it acceptable for Ukraine and Europe. He told RTL Radio aspects of the plan deserved to be discussed, negotiated, and improved. Macron adds they want peace and not an effective capitulation. A 28-point US peace proposal made last week caught many in the US government, Kyiv and Europe off-guard and prompted fresh concerns that the Trump administration might be willing to push Ukraine to sign a deal heavily tilted towards Russia.
# Cricket: South Africa set India a mammoth winning target of 549 when they declared their second innings on 260 for five on the penultimate day of the second Test in Guwahati. The Proteas scored 489 in their first innings and then bowled out the hosts for just 201. Tristan Stubbs scored 94 in the second innings. South Africa won the first match, their first Test victory in India since 2010, and is gunning for their first series victory in the country in 25-years. India reached 27 for two at stumps.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-23-cents and the euro at 19-rand-88-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-63-cents and Bitcoin trades at 86-thousand-951-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-136-dollars-8-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 62-dollars-53-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Cape Town Tourism and the local wine industry are celebrating major international recognition. Six Cape vineyards have earned spots in this year’s prestigious awards, with two making it into the global top ten of the World’s 50 Best Vineyards 2025. Cape Town Tourism’s Briony Brookes says the accolades highlight the quality and excellence of South Africa’s wine sector, with industry leaders praising the achievement as a boost for tourism and the local economy:
