# Deputy President Paul Mashatile says South Africa’s industrial landscape is increasingly marked by foreign entities acquiring local industrial firms. While acknowledging that these investments bring crucial capital and advanced technology, he warned that the trend raises concerns about potential de-industrialisation and the erosion of local ownership. Mashatile says South Africa is addressing the challenges of de-industrialisation through a state-led strategy that emphasises the need to balance foreign investment with robust domestic safeguards:

# Siyafana Sonke Action Campaign has condemned the utterances by eThekwini mayor, Cyril Xaba, feeding into the disinformation campaign targeting vulnerable migrant and refugee communities. The organisation’s July Eccles says in a recent podcast Xaba told the interviewer that displaced refugees were demanding ‘free housing’, to the detriment of South Africans. She says he knows that the refugees have been living on the streets outside the Home Affairs Refugee Office in Durban:

# Deputy Minister for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Mmapaseka Letsike, has welcomed the Human Sciences Research Council report showing growing public support for the inclusion, equality and human dignity of LGBTIQ+ persons in South Africa. She says the findings reflect encouraging progress in advancing the universal principles that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. She adds that the report reaffirms South Africa’s constitutional values of human dignity, equality, freedom and non-discrimination, while affirming the country’s commitment to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

# The DA welcomes the launch of LATAM Airlines’ direct service between Cape Town and São Paulo. The party says it is a major victory not only for the Western Cape but also for South Africa’s tourism economy, international competitiveness, and job creation. The DA says Brazil is one of South Africa’s largest tourism source markets in South America, while São Paulo serves as one of Latin America’s most important aviation hubs, offering seamless connections to dozens of destinations across the continent.

And tennis: Novak Djokovic earned another slice of Wimbledon history as the seven-time winner advanced to the fourth round, while defending champion Jannik Sinner powered past Jenson Brooksby on Friday. Djokovic beat French 25th seed Arthur Rinderknech to equal Roger Federer’s men’s singles record for most match wins at Wimbledon. He also tied Federer for most appearances in the last 16 of the men’s singles at Wimbledon in the Open era, making the fourth round for the 18th time.

Sinner delivered an imperious display to beat world number 81 Brooksby 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. The 24-year-old is into the last 16 for the fifth time, equalling Nicola Pietrangeli’s record for most Wimbledon men’s singles fourth-round appearances by an Italian. In the last 16, he will face Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki, who beat the Spaniard Rafael Jodar in the third round.
