# The Eastern Cape premier says justice Maya paves the way for future generations of women in law
# And, Olympic Games: A star-studded USA will try to win a fourth straight basketball gold
# Eskom says its generation recovery plan continues to deliver efficiencies, with an approximate reduction of over nine-billion-rand in open-cycle gas turbines diesel expenditure from 1 April to 25 July, compared to the same period last year. Eskom’s spokesperson Daphne Mokwena says the power utility’s strategic use of peaking stations, including pumped storage and gas turbines, remains key in managing electricity demand during peak times, particularly during evening peaks:
# Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane says justice Mandisa Maya appointment as chief justice paves the way for future generations of women in law and leadership. The provincial’s government spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie says her achievement is a beacon of hope and inspiration, demonstrating that with hard work and determination, anything is possible. She adds Maya’s appointment is a significant milestone in South Africa’s journey towards gender equality and representation:
# University of the Witwatersrand researcher Tracy-Lynn Field says South Africa can expect a likely increase in the number of wildfires in regions that are already hot, dry and water scarce. The major causes of local wildfires are very dry and hot conditions with temperatures of over 42-degrees, high winds and dry vegetation. Field says her research found there have been at least 22 wildfire lawsuits between 1997 and 2023. There is no climate change law yet that sets out how people who’ve suffered losses from climate-related fires can sue.
# Olympic Games: A star-studded United States men’s basketball team will try to win a fourth straight Olympic gold medal. They start their campaign today against Serbia. One of the biggest stars in the sport is four-time NBA champion Stephen Curry, who will make his Olympic debut. The 36-year-old is excited to be in Paris:
# And, motorsport: Red Bull’s Max Verstappen can break an all-time Formula 1 record in this afternoon’s Belgian Grand Prix. Verstappen and Fernando Alonso, who races for Aston Martin, are currently joint-top for the most wins from different grid positions, with the two world champions having won from nine different positions. Verstappen qualified fastest, but won’t be on pole because of a ten-place grid penalty for using a fifth internal combustion engine this season. The Dutchman therefore starts in 11th position this afternoon.
