# Minister Joe Phaahla announces one more Mpox case and a death

# The minister of Health, Joe Phaahla, has announced another laboratory-confirmed case of Mpox and second death linked to the disease. The latest case is a 38-year-old man who was admitted to a hospital in uMgungundlovu, KwaZulu-Natal, and tested positive for Mpox yesterday. He died the same day. The department’s spokesperson, Foster Mohale, says this brings the total number of positive cases in the country to six and two deaths within a period of five weeks:
# Eastern Cape Police have discovered another body of a victim of the devastating floods that ravaged Nelson Mandela Bay two weeks ago. This latest discovery brings the death toll to eleven. Over three-thousand people were displaced. Police spokesperson, Priscilla Naidu, says the body was found at Swartkops River in Kariega, one of the areas hardest hit by the floods:
# The Border Management Authority says it remains committed to protecting the 71 ports of entry while facilitating the legitimate movement of goods and people. Spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi says during a law enforcement operation, junior border guards at Mpumalanga’s Lebombo border post intercepted significant units of counterfeit alcohol. She says they were hidden in a minibus taxi from Mozambique, under bags of coal and packs of lettuce:
# Greece’s most visited tourist site, the Acropolis in Athens, was closed during the hottest hours of yesterday as the season’s earliest-ever heatwave swept the country, prompting school closures and health warnings. The Culture ministry said the UNESCO-listed archaeological site would close from midday to 5pm, with temperatures again expected to reach 43 degrees Celsius today. The first heatwave of the year in Greece, regularly hit by searing summer temperatures, is due to peak over those two days, and the ministry says the measure could be extended.
# Cricket: The West Indies are through to the Super Eight round of the T20 World Cup after defeating New Zealand by 13 runs in Trinidad. Sherfane Rutherford scored an unbeaten 68 as the co-hosts posted 149 for nine. Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph then took four wickets and left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie three and the Black Caps finished on 136 for nine. New Zealand must now beat Uganda and Papua New Guinea in their remaining games and hope other results go their way.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-35-cents and the euro at 19-rand-84-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-49-cents and Bitcoin trades at 67-thousand-470-dollars-47-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-317-dollars-72-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 82-dollars-13-cents a barrel.
