In this bulletin:
# Parliament will proceed with its first session despite MK’s concerns
# Australia’s prime minister criticises the opposition leader’s climate comments
# And tennis: A next generation of champions looks set to replace the Big Three
# Parliament will proceed with its first session as determined by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, despite concerns raised by MK Party’s legal representative. Parliament says it disagrees with Zungu Incorporated’s interpretation of Section 46 of the Constitution, and affirmed its secretary’s obligation to facilitate the session. Chief parliamentary legal adviser Zuraya Adhikarie says unless a court overturns the election results, the first sessions of the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces will be physical. Travel and accommodation for MK’s elected members will be cancelled to avoid wasteful expenditure.
Meanwhile, the City of Johannesburg says the Metro Police’s By-law Unit will remove and collate election posters of political parties that have failed to remove their posters, and issue fines. The city’s spokesperson, Virgil James, says during elections the city’s electric light poles are covered with campaign posters making streets a hue of colours. James says however, if left unchecked these make the city look unsightly and become an eyesore, hence the provisions of Section 28:
# Australia’s prime minister, Anthony Albanes,e has criticised Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton’s plans to ditch the country’s commitment to the landmark Paris Climate Agreement. Dutton says he would oppose the legislated 2030 emissions target, a 43-percent cut compared with 2005 levels, at the next election but remain committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2050. Albanese says the country cannot backslide on its emissions targets:
# Tennis: The sport is experiencing a changing of the guard, with Jannik Sinner of Italy and Carlos Alcaraz of Spain emerging as the next generation of champions. Sinner today took over as world number one from Novak Djokovic of Serbia, who, together with Spaniard Rafael Nadal and Swiss Roger Federer, dominated tennis the past two decades. When Alcaraz beat German Alexander Zverev to clinch the French Open yesterday, it was the first time since 2004 that one of the Big Three didn’t play in the final.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-71-cents and the euro at 20-rand-15-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-80-cents and Bitcoin trades at 69-thousand-396-dollars-55-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-295-dollars-80-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 79-dollars-67-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Nineteen runners who participated in the Comrades Marathon yesterday, have raised 160-thousand for Rainbows and Smiles. The charity provides emotional, social, and financial support to children with cancer. Over 20-thousand athletes tackled the 85.91-kilometre course between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Rainbows and Smiles founder Bonni Suckling says each of the 19 runners brought a personal connection to cancer, fuelling their dedication to the cause.
