# The Azanian People’s Organisation says it seems like government does not have a strategy to fight crime, to ensure that citizens are safe. This follows the death of its Western Cape leader, Mzimkhulu Nojozi, who was shot outside his home in Gugulethu, Cape Town. Azapo’s Jabu Rakwena says 63-year-old Nojozi has been advocating for a gun-free South Africa for over 20 years:
# Sibanye-Stillwater says it will initiate disciplinary action against over 200 miners who staged a sit-in at the Khwezi shaft in Rustenburg, North West. The workers were protesting against a proposed employee share scheme for the company’s Kroondal mine staff. After being underground since Monday afternoon, the last 31 miners have now resurfaced. Sibanye maintains discussions with unions over the scheme’s details are ongoing.
# The Department of Health is calling for vigilance to curb the spread of the M-pox virus. Two new cases have been confirmed in KwaZulu-Natal, with local transmission suspected. The public is urged to cooperate to prevent further transmission. The virus, transmitted through close contact and body fluids, requires early diagnosis and treatment. Health spokesperson Foster Mohale says intensified surveillance and communication efforts have been initiated to combat stigma and raise public awareness:
# Government is calling on the public to remain vigilant as heavy rains and flooding are affecting several provinces. Flooding in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal has claimed the lives of 21 people, while over four-thousand have been left displaced. The government is currently assessing damages in the two provinces and providing direction concerning further government interventions. Government’s spokesperson, Nomonde Mnukwa, says motorists are also being urged to drive cautiously.
# Cricket: Marcus Stoinis starred with bat and ball as Australia beat Oman by 39 runs in their opening match in Barbados at the T20 World Cup this morning. Australia recovered from 50 for three to post 164 for five, with half-centuries for Stoinis and David Warner. Stoinis then took three wickets as Oman was restricted to 125 for nine. The Aussies already won the World Test Championship and the 50-over World Cup and Stoinis says they are hungry for more success:
