Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Ramaphosa and Mashatile were among the first group of new MPs to be sworn in
# The NFP secretary general Canaan Mdletshe resigns over a coalition decision
# And rugby: Nine Springboks will miss the Wales and the first Ireland Test
# ANC leaders Cyril Ramaphosa and Paul Mashatile were in the first group of ten newly elected members of Parliament to be sworn in at the first sitting of the National Assembly in Cape Town this morning. More than 300 MPs have to take the oath before the election of the speaker and the president. After a member is elected president he or she will no longer be an MP. Chief Justice Raymond Zondo is chairperson for the first sitting of the National Assembly.
Meanwhile, the National Freedom Party’s secretary-general, Canaan Mdletshe, has announced his immediate resignation. This follows the party’s decision to form a coalition government with the ANC, the IFP, and the DA in KwaZulu-Natal. Mdletshe stated on social media the coalition does not serve the interests of the province’s people, but is instead about self-enrichment. He says he leaves his position confident that he served the NFP to the best of his ability.
# The National Press Club has expressed shock and sadness over the imminent closure of several Media24 mainstream print publications. These include City Press, Rapport, Beeld, and Daily Sun. Despite efforts to seek clarity from the media house, responses have not provided sufficient information. The organisation’s Albi Modise urges Media24 to engage with staff and ensure transparent processes to mitigate job losses and preserve journalistic integrity:
# Rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has confirmed that nine players will be missing for their one-off Test against Wales and the first of the two Tests against Ireland due to injuries. They include international regulars Steven Kitshoff, Lood de Jager, Canan Moodie, Damian Willemse, and Kurt-Lee Arendse. Erasmus says winger Cheslin Kolbe is touch and go for the Wales Test:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-35-cents and the euro at 19-rand-66-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-37-cents and Bitcoin trades at 67-thousand-125-dollars-12-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-319-dollars-97-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 82-dollars-22-cents a barrel.
# And finally: NASA accidentally aired a medical drill meant for training on an official livestream, prompting alarm on social media. The drill simulated an astronaut being treated for decompression sickness on the International Space Station. The audio captured a female voice instructing crew members how to deal with the patient. Recordings of the audio quickly spread on social media, sparking fears of a serious emergency on the station. NASA later confirmed the audio was inadvertently broadcast from a simulation where crew members and ground teams train for various scenarios in space.
