BULLETIN 23 June 11 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The acting minister of Police is concerned over a spate of politically-linked violence
# UNICEF says children are more than twice as likely to die from Ebola as adults in the DRC
# And cricket: The SA Under-19s Women will tour Pakistan next month
# Acting Police minister Firoz Cachalia says an attack on political representatives or supporters, regardless of party affiliation, is an attack on the democratic rights of all South Africans. This follows a spate of suspected political killings during this past weekend’s voter registration drive. Cachalia says political violence has no place in a constitutional democracy:
# Investigating Directorate Against Corruption head, advocate Andrea Johnson, has criticised the recent comments by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. He declared last week the Police Service was at war and blood would flow, after IDAC did not execute an alleged warrant of arrest against him and Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo. Johnson told News24 Mkhwanazi’s threats are serious and cannot be ignored:
# RISE Mzansi says the City of Johannesburg needs an interconnected safety ecosystem that links crime intelligence, robust detective services, and Metropolitan Police Department cooperation. The party’s mayoral candidate, Lukhona Mnguni, says crime carries high, interconnected costs that rip through communities and the economy. He says by leveraging modern technology alongside old-fashioned visible policing, crime can be prevented before it happens:
Moving abroad:
# The United Nations Children’s Fund says children, making up 15-percent of confirmed cases and over 25-percent of deaths since the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo in April, are almost twice as likely to die as adults. The DRC has surpassed one-thousand cases and 254 confirmed deaths. UNICEF chief, Catherine Russell, says over 130 children have already lost one or both parents in Ituri. She says children are especially vulnerable because they depend on caregivers and cannot distance themselves from a sick parent, as an adult can.
# Cricket: The South African Under-19 women’s squad will tour Pakistan for the first time ever next month. Allrounder Mieke van Voorst was announced as captain of the squad of 15, including six players who clinched bronze for the country in the Patricia Kambarami Cup in Nigeria earlier this year. Five international matches will be played during the tour, all being day-night games in the city of Karachi. This will be used as preparation for next year’s Under-19 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh and Nepal.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-47-cents and the euro at 18-rand-82-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-80-cents and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-889-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-120-dollars-46-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 76-dollars-39-cents a barrel.
