# The Constitutional Court deputy president honours judge Tshiqi as she hangs up her robe
# The Israeli push to take more of Gaza raises alarm
# And tennis: Djokovic is knocked out of the French Open
# Constitutional Court deputy president Justice Dunstan Mlambo has praised outgoing Constitutional Court Justice Zukisa Tshiqi for her dedication and contribution to South Africa’s judiciary and Constitution for the past 21 years. Tshiqi began her legal career in the late 1980s, joined the Johannesburg High Court in 2005, later the Supreme Court of Appeal, and the Constitutional Court in 2019. Mlambo described Tshiqi as a thoughtful and respected leader of justice:
# KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has received the National Press Club’s 2025 Newsmaker of the Year award at a gala event in Pretoria held in partnership with UNISA. The award recognises Mkhwanazi’s major impact on the national news agenda through his outspoken stance on crime and corruption. He gained national attention in July 2025 after alleging that a Gauteng-based drug cartel had infiltrated senior police:
# The National Energy Regulator of South Africa has approved an amended negotiated pricing agreement framework with Eskom for two ferrochrome producers. This includes interim concessionary tariffs. The power utility applied for a 62-cents-per-kilowatt-hour tariff for the smelters. Eskom CEO Dan Marokane says the agreement supports industrial capacity, jobs and economic activity while protecting standard customers and taxpayers from additional costs. The agreements will apply to Samancor Chrome for five years and the Glencore-Merafe Venture for three years.
# Acting Provincial Commissioner Phumelele Makoba has warned that any violent action linked to a protest by the All Truck Drivers Forum South Africa on the N2 and N3 highway today will be met with decisive law enforcement. Makoba say surveillance and deployment plans are in place as they monitor the situation and maintain law and order across the province. She has urged organisers to engage through dialogue:
# Hamas says that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s declaration that his country would expand its area of control in Gaza was a dangerous escalation. European states and residents of the Palestinian territory also voiced alarm at the plan. Under a ceasefire deal in October Israel’s military was to remain in control of 53-percent of Gaza, but Netanyahu said on Friday that it would expand that area to an initial 70-percent. The Palestinian militant group described his comments as a plan for ethnic cleansing and further forced displacement of Palestinians.
And tennis: Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca knocked Novak Djokovic out in the third round of the French Open on Friday to scupper the Serbian’s quest for a record 25th Grand Slam. The 19-year-old Fonseca rallied from two sets down for the second straight match to stun Djokovic with a phenomenal display of power-hitting. Fonseca triumphed in five sets after four hours and 53 minutes to make it through to the last 16 of a major for the first time. Djokovic afterwards said he played his normal game, but Fonseca was just better.
