# Deputy president Paul Mashatile has paid tribute to the late former Botswana president Festus Mogae, as a distinguished leader whose vision strengthened Botswana’s democracy. Speaking in Gaborone at Mogae’s state funeral, Mashatile hailed the late president for the country’s advanced economic stability, and as a continental example in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Mashatile said Mogae’s legacy strengthened regional cooperation and economic stability. He called for continued unity and cooperation in honouring Mogae’s contribution to the continent.
# Police have arrested two women linked to a viral social media video showing the reckless handling of unlicensed firearms in Midrand. The suspects, from Ebony Park, were arrested in Kaalfontein after police intercepted a vehicle they were travelling in. They are being held at Tembisa South police station. Their arrests follow the detention of two men connected to the firearms shown in the clip. The men face charges including illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, and a hijacked vehicle. They will appear in court this week.
# DA parliamentary leader George Michalakis has called for a Special Investigating Unit probe into alleged cyber fraud in the City of Ekurhuleni. Michalakis says reports suggest hackers, allegedly working with officials, accessed municipal electricity billing systems and erased or altered debts, causing a revenue shortfall of more than two-billion-rand. He warns the alleged breaches and possible corruption could severely affect service delivery and may involve violations of the Municipal Finance Management Act.
# Inkatha Freedom Party Johannesburg Mayoral committee member for Human Settlements, Mlungisi Mabaso says the party wants to restore Johannesburg to a city residents can be proud of. Mabaso says local governments must focus on job creation and economic opportunities to reduce dependency on government support. Mabaso also pledged to restore discipline, service delivery and clean governance in the city as it prioritises honest leadership:
# Soccer: Manchester City defeated Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley to win the FA Cup and complete a domestic cup double – their eighth FA Cup title and Pep Guardiola’s third in the competition. Antoine Semenyo scored the winning goal with a superb back-heel flick from Erling Haaland’s cross. Chelsea pushed for an equaliser, with Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez going close. Guardiola hailed the team in his 20th major trophy as manager:
And staying with soccer: The South African Football Association has confirmed Bafana Bafana will face Nicaragua national football team in a farewell international friendly on May 29 at Orlando Stadium. Coach Hugo Broos selected Nicaragua to prepare the squad for the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football style they expect against co-hosts Mexico. South Africa and Mexico will lock horns in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the iconic Estadio Azteca.
