Residents were urged to avoid the area and keep a clear way for emergency vehicles.

A major tsunami warning was issued for the area but was later downgraded to a less serious advisory. Experts warned tremors and aftershocks could continue for several days. A Japanese government spokesperson warned people in the area to stay away from the coast.
