# EFF deputy president Floyd Shivambu says they will field their own candidate for president and National Assembly speaker in the first sitting of Parliament on Friday. Pressure is mounting on political parties to agree on forming a government of national unity proposed by the ANC. Speaking to the SABC, Shivambu says the ANC’s approach to constituting a new government has been disappointing:
Meanwhile, the Patriotic Alliance says it will meet with the MK Party today to discuss the election results and potential coalition agreements. The party recently met with the ANC over the proposal for the formation of a government of national unity. The P-A has secured nine seats in the National Assembly and a further ten seats in provincial legislatures. The party says its approach is one of seeking consensus wherever possible and agreeing to disagree when necessary.
# The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa in Mpumalanga has welcomed the three life terms sentences imposed to former police constable Sizwe Cedric Khoza. He was sentenced by the High Court for murdering his wife, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law in April last year. DENOSA’s provincial secretary, Cyril Mdhluli, says the sentence is a strong stance against gender-based violence:
# The United Nations Human Rights office is calling for the immediate release of all UN staff held in Yemen by de facto Houthi authorities. The Iran-backed rebels arrested 13 UN staffers on Monday, claiming they were linked to the CIA, and had been conducting espionage operations in the country for years. UN Human Rights spokesperson, Ravina Shamdasani, says any further targeting of human rights and humanitarian workers in Yemen must cease immediately:
# Cricket: South Africa has qualified for the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup after Sri Lanka’s match against Nepal in Florida was abandoned without a ball being bowled because of rain. With three victories out of three matches, the Proteas lead Group D with six points, while Bangladesh and the Netherlands have two points each from two games. South Africa’s final group game is against Nepal in Kingstown on Saturday.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-55-cents and the euro at 19-rand-92-cents.
