# Thirty-eight migrants were killed and 100 are missing after a boat capsized in Yemen
# And soccer: Bafana’s coach says tonight’s World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe is a must-win
# The Institute of Race Relations supports the idea of appointing an independent Finance minister as part of the formation of the government of national unity. During talks with the ANC, the DA reportedly proposed that president Cyril Ramaphosa appoints a Finance minister who is not part of the ANC. The institute’s Michael Morris says appointing a credible, qualified, and non-partisan person to lead National Treasury, offers a route to depoliticising key cabinet portfolios:
Meanwhile, political analyst Mpumelelo Mkhabela says a government of national unity deal that entirely depends on Ramaphosa would be unsustainable. In an opinion piece for News24, Mkhabela says the usual factional battles within the ANC will ensue ahead of the elective conference in 2027. He adds this will further weaken the party and possibly make it difficult for Ramaphosa to hold the government of national unity together.
# Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has condemned the barbershop shooting in Site C, Khayelitsh,a on Saturday, which claimed four lives. Unknown gunmen entered the barbershop in Gqrwarha Street and opened fire. A 30-year-old man and two children aged eleven and 12 died on the scene. A five-year-old boy later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Hill-Lewis says this brazen and ruthless mass shooting was well-organised by criminals who do not fear the police:
# At least 38 migrants, travelling from the Horn of Africa, have died while over 100 others are still missing after their boat capsized off the coast of Yemen. Seventy-eight people were rescued. Authorities say those on board were mostly from Ethiopia, using Yemen as a transit point to reach Gulf states. The International Organisation for Migration says the number of African migrants making the crossing annually had tripled from roughly 27-thousand in 2021 to over 90-thousand last year.
# Soccer: Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos says tonight’s World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe in Bloemfontein is a must-win. This will be South Africa’s third meeting against the Warriors in the preliminaries for the global competition, equalling the number they have played against Burkina Faso, their most frequent opponent. Broos says he has confidence in his team to get over the line:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-65-cents and the euro at 20-rand-8-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-72-cents and Bitcoin trades at 67-thousand-616-dollars-23-cents.
