# ActionSA says a government of national unity will render opposition watchdogs toothless
# And the reconstruction of Gaza will create nearly 60 million tons of carbon dioxide
# EFF leader Julius Malema has rejected the ANC’s proposal to form a government of national unity, saying they cannot share power with the enemy. President Cyril Ramaphosa says establishing a government of national unity is the most viable and effective way to meet the expectations of all South Africans. In a series of posts on social media, Malema said the ANC is arrogant, as it cannot dictate the way forward as if it won the elections.
ActionSA has also shut down the ANC’s proposal for the formation of a government of national unity, saying the idea will render opposition watchdogs toothless. The ANC has already had discussions with parties including the DA, the EFF, and the IFP. Ramaphosa says a government of national unity will focus on building an inclusive economy, creating jobs, ending crime and corruption, and improving service delivery. ActionSA’s chairperson, Michael Beaumont, says the party’s future role is being a constructive opposition:
# The City of Tshwane’s Council has approved the 50.6-billion-rand budget for the 2024/25 financial year. The budget consists of 48.3-billion-rand in operating costs and 2.3-billion-rand in capital infrastructure investment. Mayor Cilliers Brink says in formulating the budget, they have put a strong focus on achieving financial recovery, energy independence, and driving visible service delivery:
# Reconstructing the estimated 200-thousand buildings destroyed in the first four months of Israel’s assault on Gaza, will generate nearly 60 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. This is according to research published on the Social Science Research Network. Co-author of the research, Ben Neimark, says one of the serious consequences of the war has been the violation of the right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment. He adds while the world’s attention is rightly focused on the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, the climate consequences are also catastrophic.
# Rugby: Former Stormers player Oli Kebble hopes for victory over his old team in Saturday’s United Rugby Championship quarterfinal before his stint at Glasgow Warriors comes to an end. The prop played 101 matches for the Scottish team since joining them in 2017, and also played 11 Tests for his adopted country. Thirty-one-year-old Kebble hasn’t revealed yet where he plans to go next season, just saying he’s got to make a decision soon. He hopes to leave the Warriors with some silverware.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-89-cents and the euro at 20-rand-59-cents.
