In this bulletin:
# The Reserve Bank governor warns against unsustainable coalition policies
# The FF Plus wants flood-affected areas in KZN declared disaster areas
# And, an Israeli strike has killed 30 people, including children, at a UN school in Gaza
# The governor of the South African Reserve Bank, Lesetja Kganyago, has warned that if coalition policies are not stable, South Africa is likely to lose investors. The ANC is now in talks with opposition parties to form a coalition government after losing its majority in last week’s election. Some economists believe a coalition agreement between the ANC and DA could help to ease market jitters. Kganyago says the central bank will continue to deliver on its mandate:
# The MK Party leadership has initiated urgent discussions with Police minister Bheki Cele over the killing of its members. Two of the party’s members were killed in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, a day before the general elections. Another one was shot dead in KwaZulu-Natal. MK says it is deeply troubling that police are now being deployed in readiness to quell potential post-election violence from the party. It says this stance is profoundly misplaced and unjust, as it is clear that its members are victims, and not the perpetrators.
# The Freedom Front Plus is calling on the KwaZulu-Natal government to declare the areas affected by the recent floods, such as Tongaat, disaster areas. In the past few days, the province was hit by severe weather, such as heavy rains and damaging winds, along with a tornado, that has claimed the lives of eleven people. The FF Plus’s Rochelle Robbetze says declaring a state of disaster will unlock the resources needed to assist victims and repair damage:
# At least 30 Palestinians, including five children, have been killed in an Israeli airstrike at a United Nations-run school in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. The Israeli military has confirmed that it carried out a strike at the school, saying it had been home to Hamas terrorists who had taken part in the October 7 attack on Israel. Hamas has described the attack as a horrific massacre that shames humanity.
# Motorsport: Mercedes has revealed it will bring further upgrades to the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend. The Silver Arrows’ best result in a Grand Prix so far this season has been fifth, but the team was encouraged by the performance of a new front wing introduced on George Russell’s car in Monaco. Mercedes’s trackside engineering director, Andrew Shovlin, says they are closing the gap on the teams in front, Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-88-cents and the euro at 20-rand-57-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-18-cents and Bitcoin trades at 70-thousand-870-dollars-91-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-367-dollars-23-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 78-dollars-89-cents a barrel.
