BULLETIN 2 June 11 am
Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# There are reportedly already fractures within the ANC over coalition partners
# The British prime minister supports the proposed Gaza ceasefire deal
# And cricket: The USA is off to a winning start in the T20 World Cup
# Discussions are reportedly already underway between senior leaders in the ANC, the EFF and the MKP to form a coalition, however, president Cyril Ramaphosa is not part of them. This is according to City Press. The ANC has lost its three-decade-old absolute majority in a watershed election, as South Africa now enters an era of coalition government. City Press reports that informal discussions have also already begun between the DA, IFP and people close to Ramaphosa’s camp in the ANC.
# The ACDP’s National Executive Committee has appointed an independent elections analyst to spearhead the party’s objections to the Electoral Commission in respect of the results. This comes as the party says it has been inundated with queries, complaints and allegations about the voting and counting process. ACDP’s, Raymond Tlaeli, says the work of the independent analyst could take months, as party agents and voters may be asked to submit more information, evidence or affidavits relating to their experiences:
# Cosatu has welcomed the signing of the Revenue Laws Amendment Bill into law by president Cyril Ramaphosa, saying this will enable the long-sought two-pot retirement system. The amendment law addresses the concerns related to lack of preservation before retirement and a lack of access to retirement funds by households in financial distress. Cosatu’s, Matthew Parks, says the two-pot system provides a progressive compromise and fair balance, where workers will have access to a portion of their pension funds whilst remaining employed:
# British prime minister Rishi Sunak says the latest proposed ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas is very much welcomed. The proposal features three phases, starting with a six-week full ceasefire, the release of a few hostages, and the surge of humanitarian aid into Gaza. The proposal also includes a rebuilding programme in Gaza. Sunak says sustainable and lasting peace is what everyone wants and needs in the Middle East:
# And finally Cricket: T20 World Cup co-hosts USA got their campaign off to a winning start after beating North American neighbours Canada by seven wickets in the opening game in Texas. Navneet Dhaliwal scored 61 as Canada, who are making their T20 World Cup debut, posted 194 for five. In reply, Aaron Jones smashed an unbeaten 94 off 40 balls as the USA successfully chased the target with 14 balls to spare. The USA co-hosts the tournament with the West Indies, who play Papua New Guinea in Guyana today.
