# Controversial prophet Shepherd Bushiri has accused senior South African police officials of demanding 12-million-rand in 2016 as a protection fee. Speaking during a church service, Bushiri alleged the officers, including one “General Sibiya,” solicited bribes to make his case disappear and later turned against him. Bushiri claimed to have reported the matter to the Independent Police Directorate, but no action was taken. He says escalating threats ultimately forced him to flee to Malawi in 2020 for safety:
# The death toll from Saturday evening’s drive-by shooting in Reiger Park, Boksburg, has risen to six after one of the injured victims died in hospital. The acting provincial police commissioner in Gauteng, major general Fred Kekana, has since mobilised resources to investigate the incident. Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said three people are still being treated in hospital:
# City Power has condemned the deliberate destruction of streetlights along key Johannesburg routes, including the M1 between Southgate and Killarney ahead of the G20 Summit. Spokesperson Isaac Mangena says it is an act of sabotage as the utility placed newly repaired lights which are being cut down suggesting intentional disruption. He urges the SAPS and Johannesburg Metro Police Department to intensify patrols and investigations to protect infrastructure and ensure public safety:
# Authorities in the Western Cape are urging heightened vigilance as a hot, dry summer raises the risk of wildfires across the province. Garden Route District Municipality and other regional bodies note that below-average rainfall and dried vegetation fuel the danger. Residents are advised to avoid open fires, extinguish cigarettes properly, and immediately report any signs of smoke to fire services.
# Nine people have died in a crowd surge at a popular Hindu temple in southern India. Authorities said dozens of others were injured in the crush at the Swamy Venkateswara Temple, where thousands of devotees had gathered to mark a sacred day in the Hindu calendar. Despite having a maximum capacity of 3,000, the crowd at the temple swelled to around 25,000 on Saturday. An initial investigation found that an iron grille meant to maintain the queue of worshippers at the temple broke, leading to an uncontrolled surge of people.
# And in Cricket: The Pakistan bowlers, led by Shaheen Shah Afridi, overpowered the South African batting line-up once again, restricting the visitors to 139 for nine in the third and final T20 International at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Saturday evening. Shaheen took 3 for 26 before Pakistan’s star batter Babar Azam hit 68 from 47 balls to guide the home team to a four wicket win over the Proteas to win the series 2-1. South Africa won the first match with 55 runs in Rawalpindi, while Pakistan took the second by nine wickets, also in Lahore.
