# Old Mutual Investment says a government of national unity that can balance the pursuit of the social reform agenda while driving economic growth will garner market support. The DA, IFP, Patriotic Alliance, and RISE Mzansi have all publicly said they will join the ANC’s government of national unity. Old Mutual Investment’s, Meryl Pick, told the SABC that while this period demonstrates a change in the country’s political landscape, it has the potential to address some of the structural issues facing South Africa:
# ActionSA in KwaZulu-Natal says the removal of eThekwini mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda, highlights the dynamics of the ANC-DA coalition agreement, dressed up as the government of national unity. The ANC has redeployed Kaunda to the National Council of Provinces. ActionSA’s Zwakele Mncwango says this decision by the ANC is a mere stunt aimed at nursing the DA’s ego, using Kaunda as a sacrificial lamb:
# The South African Correctional Services Workers Union condemns the Department of Correctional Services for distancing itself from allegations of inmate abuse. The union criticises the department for neglecting its duty to uphold justice and human dignity and calls for fair treatment and rehabilitation for detainees. Spokesperson Alude Jizana demands a thorough investigation into the abuse claims and asks for proper disciplinary action against any officers found guilty:
# Global Rights Compliance says Russia engaged in a deliberate pattern of starvation tactics during the 85-day siege of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol in early 2022, which amounted to a war crime. It has been estimated that 22-thousand people were killed during the siege. Lawyers for Global Rights Compliance are preparing a dossier to submit to the International Criminal Court. The dossier estimates that 90-percent of healthcare facilities and homes in Mariupol were destroyed or damaged, and food distribution points were bombed as well as humanitarian evacuation routes.
# Olympic Games: French Open champions Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal have been named in the Spain team for the 2024 Olympic Games. World number two Alcaraz last weekend won his first Roland Garros title on the clay in Paris, where the Olympic tournament will take place from 27 July to 4 August. In addition to the singles tournament, Alcaraz and Nadal may also take part in the Games’ doubles event.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-41-cents and the euro at 19-rand-90-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-54-cents and Bitcoin trades at 67-thousand-512-dollars-10-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-310-dollars-91-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 82-dollars-39-cents a barrel.
