# The Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution says political parties don’t have to form coalitions before the first session of Parliament. The Constitution requires the session to take place within 14 days after the election results were declared, for members to be sworn in, and the election of the speaker, deputy speaker, and president. It says nothing about a timeframe for the president to form a government. Casac believes a broad agreement should be in place for a majority of MPs to elect the president.
# The Democratic Union Party wants the annulment of the recent general elections, saying it is still of the view that sections of the Electoral Matters Amendment Act are unconstitutional. The Constitutional Court dismissed the party’s application on Monday, which sought to address the irregularities of the Act. DUP’s spokesperson, Thapelo Makgale, says they believe that conducting the elections under the Electoral Act resulted in the election of an unlawful government:
# Short-term insurer Santam has over the past 48 hours received claims from various parts of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, resulting from the severe weather that has impacted the provinces in the past few days. Flooding has claimed the lives of ten people and left over three-thousand displaced. Santam’s Thabo Mabaso says to date, they have received just over 254 claims for damage to property and other assets from the Eastern Cape and 132 from KwaZulu-Natal:
# United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, says countries must confront not just the fossil-fuel industry, but also companies that support efforts to obstruct climate action. He has called on the world’s fossil fuel industries to be banned from advertising, to help save the world from climate change. Guterres says the world must directly confront those in the fossil fuel industry who have shown relentless zeal for obstructing progress:
# Soccer: Amnesty International wants Fifa to rigorously and transparently ensure bids to host the 2030 and 2034 men’s World Cups safeguard human rights. In October last year, Fifa awarded the 2030 World Cup to Morocco, Spain, and Portugal while Saudi Arabia is the lone bidder for the 2034 edition. Amnesty International’s Steve Cockburn says history shows that the World Cup can be a source of dignity or exploitation, inclusion or discrimination, and freedom or repression.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-90-cents and the euro at 20-rand-58-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-19-cents and Bitcoin trades at 71-thousand-63-dollars-29-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-368-dollars-65-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 78-dollars-75-cents a barrel.
