# And Donald Trump says deal to end war will be signed ‘today’
# Police are investigating the deaths of Caroline von Rantzau, the heiress to a million-dollar German shipping firm, DAL, and her finance manager at her family’s private hunting reserve in Limpopo. The 26-year-old was found dead inside her room at the Leeuwfontein Estate, one day after the estate’s financial manager, Arno Koën, was also found murdered on the property. Koën, a foster father to von Rantzau, was in charge of the bookings and finances at the estate. Police confiscated a licensed rifle and a pistol, while investigations continue.
# DA leader and Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has launched his campaign for a second term ahead of the November municipal elections. Speaking in Hanover Park, Hill-Lewis unveiled a five-point plan focused on stronger policing, job creation, reliable services, more housing, and cleaner public spaces. He says Cape Town has become a model for effective local government and pledged to build a safer, cleaner, and more affordable city:
# The DA says thousands of teenage pregnancies highlight a serious breakdown in the government’s system for reporting and prosecuting child sexual abuse. The party has filed a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission because many cases of statutory rape are not being properly reported as required by law. The DA’s Angel Khanyile says this failure means many abusers are not investigated or prosecuted, leaving vulnerable children unprotected:
# The Motor Industry Staff Association has criticised the Motus Group for retrenching 67 employees amid strong vehicle sales and improved financial performance. MISA says the job cuts were unjustified and not a last resort, arguing that the company failed to meaningfully consider alternatives during consultations. MISA spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola maintains that Motus abused retrenchment provisions to reduce labour costs. She confirmed that several retrenchment disputes are before the Labour Court:
# U.S. President Donald Trump and mediator Pakistan said yesterday an initial deal to end the war in the Middle East would be signed today, although Iran denied it would take place so soon. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the two sides had agreed on a framework for a peace deal and Islamabad was preparing for signing today, to be followed by technical-level talks next week. The proposed deal calls for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the U.S. naval blockade. Reportedly, negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program would take place afterwards.
# And motorsport: George Russell of Mercedes claimed pole position for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix after a thrilling end to the qualifying session yesterday. The Briton clinched his third pole of the season by finishing just 0.064-seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton in his upgraded Ferrari, who bumped championship leader Kimi Antonelli in the other Mercedes on to the second row. Last year’s champion, Lando Norris, came in fourth, and his teammate Oscar Piastri came in seventh. Red Bull duo Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar came fifth and sixth, respectively.
