# President Cyril Ramaphosa says Reverend Jesse Jackson chose to belong to South Africans by raising his voice against apartheid on their behalf. Ramaphosa paid tribute to the late human rights leader at a memorial service in Chicago, yesterday. The president says when the nation’s cause was ignored, and many would look away, he stood firm in solidarity with South Africa:
# Acting Police minister, Firoz Cachalia says the deployment of army in communities affected by gang violence has been delayed due to the risks associated with deploying military. He confirmed the delay during a visit to Sophiatown police station, in Johannesburg following a mass shooting that claimed two live in Westbury on Wednesday. Cachalia says the army will be deployed in Gauteng, North West, Free State, Western Cape and the Eastern Cape:
# The DA in Johannesburg mayoral candidate, Helen Zille launched her five pledges to the people of Johannesburg in the preparation of the upcoming local government elections. Zille says the DA will partner with the private sector to build Johannesburg’s future focusing on the reliable water and electricity for all residents, roads that work and attract 200-thousand new jobs to Joburg. She adds that the party will eradicate corruption, make public spaces safer and install a professional and modern government:
# Rugby: In yesterday’s Six Nations action, Scotland defeated France 50–40 at Murrayfield. The Scots scored seven tries, including braces from Kyle Steyn and Darcy Graham, to end France’s winning streak. In Rome, Italy secured an historic 23-18 win over England, this after the Roses were leading 18-10 at half-time. Combined with Ireland’s 27–17 win against Wales on Friday night, the results leave Ireland, Scotland, and England in contention for the title heading into the final round next Saturday.
# Golf: South Africa’s Hennie du Plessis has surged into the lead at 14-under-par after firing a spectacular course-record-equalling 62 in his third round at the Joburg Open yesterday. England’s Brandon Robinson Thompson, who led overnight at 12-under, is currently at 13-under-par through 16 holes of his third round. Du Plessis’s compatriots, Jayden Schaper completed his third round at 8-under-par for a total of 68 for the day and is currently tied for 11th, while Robin Williams is tied for 14th at 8-under-par total.
# And finally: The Department of Health is warning the public about fake news spreading on social media platforms, suggesting that people living with HIV will receive a one-thousand-200-rand grant from May this year. The department’s spokesperson, Foster Mohale says this is false and misleading information, and the public is therefore advised to always fact-check or verify information received through social media with reliable and credible sources before sharing:
