# Malema submits an urgent motion for the impeachment of Ramaphosa over Phala Phala
# Fikile Mbalula says the ANC-DA agreement promotes accountability in multi-party governance
# And, rugby: Currie Cup First Division kicks off with a bang
# EFF president Julius Malema has submitted an urgent motion for the establishment of an impeachment committee in terms of Section 89 of the Constitution to the speaker of Parliament, Thoko Didiza. The EFF’s deputy president, Floyd Shivambu, says the report of an independent panel found there was prima facie case for impeachment against Ramaphosa for the Phala Phala matter. Shivambu says Parliament should act swiftly:
Earlier, ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said the ANC had met with all parties except ActionSA and United Africans Transformation, with ongoing efforts to reach out. Speaking on the sidelines of the first sitting of the seventh Parliament in Cape Town, he announced the ANC continues to engage with the MK Party to be part of a government of national unity. Mbalula notes progress in the successful formation of a government of national unity in six provinces, including Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal:
# The Department of Health has reported an increase in M-pox cases, with the total now at seven. All patients are living with chronic illnesses such as HIV, suggesting a high likelihood of immunocompromise if there is no adherence to prescribed treatments. The department’s Foster Mohale says the latest case, a 39-year-old male from Northcliff, Gauteng, was admitted to a Cape Town health facility with extensive lesions:
# Ukraine’s Foreign ministry calls Russian president Vladimir Putin’s cease-fire plan “manipulative,” “absurd” and designed to “mislead the international community. Putin promised yesterday to “immediately” order a cease-fire and begin negotiations if Ukraine starts withdrawing troops from the four regions annexed by Moscow and renounces plans to join NATO. Kiev says Putin’s suggestions undermine diplomatic efforts for achieving a just peace, and split international unity. Switzerland is this weekend hosting scores of world leaders, but not from Moscow, regarding the war in Ukraine.
# And, rugby: The Currie Cup First Division kicks off with a bang today, when the Valke host defending champions Boland Kavaliers in a rematch of last year’s final at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park, in one of three opening-round matches. Kick-off is at 3pm. The SWD Eagles face Eastern Province in the first encounter of the new campaign which starts at 2pm at the picturesque Outeniqua Park in George, while Border host the Leopards at Police Park in East London at 3pm.
