# Union federation Cosatu says it will engage the ANC and the South African Communist Party on the proposed government of national unity. The federation, currently consulting internally, aims to ensure progressive principles that uplift the working class and adhere to the Constitution are prioritised. Cosatu spokesperson Zanele Sabela says stability and coherence are crucial to avoid coalition pitfalls that impede service delivery:
# The Buffalo City Metro advises residents to avoid rebuilding on riverbanks and low-lying areas, following weather warnings of more rain and strong winds. Over four-thousand people have been affected by floods, with one-thousand-500 displaced. The metro says it is coordinating with government departments for temporary relocation structures. Meanwhile, electrical faults are being addressed in East London, Mdantsane and eQonce, while beaches remain closed due to dangerous sea conditions.
# Rwandan president Paul Kagame will face two challengers in next month’s election. National Electoral Commission chief Oda Gasinzigwa named Kagame, the Democratic Green Party’s Frank Habineza, and independent candidate Philippe Mpayimana as candidates for the 15 July election. Gasinzigwa says the People Salvation Movement leader, Diane Rwigara, has been excluded from contesting for failing to provide the required documents, including a criminal record and proof that she is Rwandan. A final list of candidates will be announced next Friday.
# Cricket: South Africa will take on the Netherlands today in their second match at the T20 World Cup. The Dutch have beaten the Proteas in two World Cup meetings in the last two years. It will be a second consecutive game in New York for the South Africans, who defeated Sri Lanka in a very low-scoring game. Wicketkeeper/batter Heinrich Klaasen hopes for a better batting surface:
# And, AgriSA has announced this year’s green horizons agricultural congress. It is scheduled for 9 and 10 October in Cape Town. The congress, themed ‘green horizons’, will focus on sustainable agriculture, innovative strategies and industry collaboration. Featuring a new format, the event will host discussion sessions on various topics across multiple venues in the V and A Waterfront. AgriSA CEO Johann Kotzé says attendees can expect deep-dive discussions, networking opportunities and a gala dinner celebrating the organisation’s 120-year journey.
