# President Cyril Ramaphosa says the freedom of women is indivisible, as no culture, religion, government or ideology can justify reducing women to lesser human beings. He delivered the keynote address at the National Women’s Day commemoration event at the Union Buildings in Pretoria yesterday. Ramaphosa says since the advent of democracy, South Africa has made significant strides in empowering women. He says government is committed to building a South Africa in which no woman’s potential is limited by poverty, prejudice, violence or discrimination:
# The Congress of the People Women’s Chapter is calling for a new era of women’s empowerment and leadership. COPE Women’s spokesperson Elisa Mookho Ngoebo says gender-based violence, poverty, unemployment, discrimination and economic exclusion remain a challenge for women. She urges women and young people to vote for accountable leadership, clean governance and change in the upcoming Local Government Elections:
# National Coloured Congress leader Fadiel Adams is set to testify before the Madlanga Commission this week over his whistleblower complaint that triggered investigations into senior Crime Intelligence officials. Adams is expected to face questions about his Section 27 referral and allegations of corruption and misuse of secret funds. His testimony follows evidence from Investigating Directorate Against Corruption officials concerning the handling of the investigation. Adams is currently a suspended member of Parliament, for bringing the National Assembly into disrepute.
# The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development will launch Access to Justice Week in Kimberley as part of efforts to combat Gender-Based Violence and Femicide. The campaign provides free legal advice and assistance at courts nationwide, focusing on women, children and vulnerable communities. Justice officials, the National Prosecuting Authority, SAPS and Legal Aid South Africa offer services through information desks. The department says the initiative aims to improve access to justice and promote community volunteerism.
# Shanghai faces a severe weather emergency today as Typhoon Dolphin approaches, bringing torrential rains and extreme flooding. Local authorities have issued a Red Warning, urging residents to stay indoors and halt non-essential activities. Major transit hubs expect widespread cancellations, and public infrastructure is bracing for impact. Due to safety concerns, the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai is suspending all services. Response teams are on high alert as the region prepares for the storm’s full force.
# And rugby: A late try from Faf de Klerk helped the Cheetahs claim a 31-26 victory over the Stormers-23 in their Currie Cup clash at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on Sunday. The visitors outscored the Capetonians by five tries to four. The win lifts the Cheetahs to second on the log, level on points with the table topping Griquas, while the Stormers climb to sixth after collecting two bonus points. There were also victories for the Sharks, Pumas and Griquas at the weekend.
