# The SAHRC report shows 116 children died of malnutrition in Eastern Cape
# The DA urges minister Motsoaledi to expedite immigration legislation [SOUND]
#And cricket: Protea victory marred by Bavuma injury concern
# The South African Human Rights Commission conducted an investigation in the Eastern Cape, revealing a dire situation regarding child malnutrition. An astonishing 116 children fell victim to severe acute malnutrition between 2021 and 2022. The inquiry noted an additional crisis, emphasising the high incidence of stunting among 27 percent of children due to malnutrition. The report exposed alarming health challenges and emphasised the need for extensive nutritional programmes, particularly in rural areas and early learning centres.
# The DA is urging Home Affairs minister Aaron Motsoaledi to expedite immigration legislation following the Constitutional Court’s decision, ordering him to personally cover legal costs. According to the party, the court’s rare punitive action highlights Motsoaledi’s negligence in failing to amend the Immigration Act, rendering deportation confirmations since 2019 legally invalid. The DA’s Angel Khanyile calls for expedited legislation to prevent further delays and ensure responsible leadership in the Department of Home Affairs:
# The National Prosecuting Authority is urging endangered witnesses to seek State protection. This follows the recent tragic assassination of Sicelubuhle Moyo and her partner, William Dube, near the Randburg Magistrates Court. Moyo was a crucial witness in a police brutality case. NPA’s Gauteng spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, highlighted that the State’s witness protection programme is a voluntary but critical process necessitating endangered individuals to come forward. The NPA acts swiftly upon receiving information, evaluating the threat to ensure witness safety.
# The recent Webfleet Road Safety report underscores South Africa’s infrastructure decay, with commercial fleet operators citing deteriorating roads as a primary factor in accidents. Among other reasons highlighted were driver fatigue and vehicle maintenance. Webfleet’S Justin Manson told eNCA that fleet operators have complained about maintenance issues:
# And, cricket: South Africa beat Afghanistan by five wickets in their last group game at the World Cup in India. But the victory has been clouded by concern over the fitness of Temba Bavuma. The skipper’s hamstring injury battles were evident and he could only contribute 23 runs to South Africa’s total of 247 for five. Rassie van der Dussen top-scored with an unbeaten 76. Afghanistan were earlier bowled out for 244, with Gerald Coetzee claiming four for 44. The Proteas are up against Australia in the semi-finals on Thursday.
