# The University of South Africa will be the academic partner of the 10th World Conference on Women’s Studies set to take place in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in May. The conference aims to improve participants’ knowledge of global feminism, and the theoretical, policy and personal dimensions of Women’s Studies scholar activism worldwide. Unisa’s Lefatshe Moagi says she believes that the academic partnership of the conference is an excellent opportunity for the university, as it will boost the institution’s international academic credentials, ranking and research.
# Fifteen unemployed young people are participating in a mixed farming systems learnership at the SEED Rocklands Abundance Centre in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town. They were recruited for the programme via Jobs Connect. Mayoral committee member for Economic Growth, James Vos, says the learners are taught how to grow plants, flowers, and vegetables which are then used to support local feeding schemes. He says the plants and flowers are used in the manufacturing of hair products, washing powder and soaps:
# The City of Cape Town’s child safety initiative Identikidz has concluded with impressive results. Over 130-thousand children were tagged, marking the highest number in the past three seasons. Only 302 kids were lost, the lowest in three years, showcasing the project’s effectiveness. Strand emerged as the busiest beach, with 21-thousand-536 children tagged and 67 reunions. Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Patricia van der Ross, urges continued vigilance as summer persists:
# The public transport service GO GEORGE in the Southern Cape city has embarked on another round of school visits to familiarise grade 8 learners who take the bus to school with their different route options. Senior learners will also be shown how to use the network of routes and fixed schedules to their advantage. The George municipality’s spokesperson, Debra Sauer, says although most know which route to use to school, learners who started high school this year might not be aware of the different routes:
# And finally: Sylvester Stallone’s Expend4bles has scored the most nominations with seven for the Golden Raspberry Awards, the formal name for the Razzies. The film has received nods including for Worst Picture, and Worst Supporting Actress and Actor for Megan Fox and Stallone respectively. Tied for second place with five nominations are The Exorcist: Believer, and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. The nominees were selected by Razzie voters, comprising one-thousand-179 movie buffs, film critics and journalists. The awards will be on the ninth of March.
