Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# Preparations are in full swing for the Africa Energy Indaba, which will shine a spotlight on the crucial role of electric vehicles in shaping sustainable transportation across Africa. Scheduled for next month at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, the Indaba will feature an Electric Vehicle Forum aimed at promoting and expediting the adoption of EV solutions. Discussions will cover the latest EV technology, sustainable charging infrastructure, the potential for carbon emissions reduction in the transportation sector, and policies and regulations in the sector.
# Sateliot has partnered with the Endangered Wildlife Trust to deploy 5G IoT sensors on endangered vultures across Africa. This is in a bid to combat wildlife poaching and track threatened birds in remote regions. Illegal trade has seen thousands of vultures poisoned across Africa, devastating populations, and driving them toward extinction in the wild. Endangered Wildlife Trust’s, Alison Janicke, says Sateliot’s support will significantly impact the organisation, by freeing up funds and resources for critical on-the-ground conservation efforts.
# And finally: British amateur photographer, Nima Sarikhani, has won this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award. The winning photograph is titled, Ice Bed, and is an image of a napping polar bear curled up on an iceberg. It was captured off Norway’s Svalbard archipelago. It was chosen from a shortlist of 25 images, which was previously narrowed down from around 50-thousand entries. Sarikhani says he hopes that the photograph inspires hope that there is still time to fix the climate mess humans have caused.
