Necsa backs small modular reactors for SA’s nuclear future

# The Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa has rallied support for the adoption of small modular reactors to strengthen the country’s power grid and replace ageing coal stations. Necsa executive Sengiphile Simelane says the company is interested in the use of small modular reactors for non-energy purposes, including the production of process heat for industrial purposes, and desalination for the production of clean hydrogen. He stressed that Necsa is ready to fuel and support a future nuclear fleet and is actively assisting Eskom with upgrades at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station.
