Mobile operators face January deadline to zero-rate public-benefit content

# South Africa’s major mobile network operators have until 15 January 2027 to make digital content from thousands of qualifying public-benefit organisations data-free. The obligation forms part of the conditions attached to the 2022 spectrum auction. The DG Murray Trust says only a small number of organisations have so far been zero-rated, despite thousands potentially qualifying. The Trust is calling on operators and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa to urgently clarify implementation and enforcement plans. It says that zero-rating could improve access to education, healthcare, and job opportunities.
