Mining sector’s shift to renewable power accelerates as coal-based grid power remain

# South African mining companies are accelerating investment in renewable energy to cut costs, diversify power supplies and reduce reliance on Eskom. Anglo American and Sibanye-Stillwater are among firms partnering with independent producers in securing wind and solar power. Anglo’s Envusa Energy venture currently generates 520-megawatts, while Sibanye has contracted 835-megawatts. Giving an update on progress at the Sustainable Infrastructure Development Symposium, Sibanye-Stillwater’s CEO Richard Stewart says renewable power could cost between 20 to 30 percent less than Eskom tariffs, although coal-based grid power will remain important for baseload supply.
