Merger delayed again for state digital communications project

# The long-planned merger between Sentech and Broadband Infraco has been pushed to the 2028/2029 financial year. The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies says the 2026/2027 focus will be on developing a new roadmap to improve efficiency and reduce duplication. This comes as Broadband Infraco continues to face serious financial and operational challenges, including losses and audit issues. The department says the merger plan approved in 2017, remains delayed despite repeated commitments from the government. Broadband Infraco manages South Africa’s fibre-optic infrastructure connecting the nine provinces and bordering SADC countries.
