# Deputy president Paul Mashatile says the government is tightening measures to deal with municipalities defaulting on water payments. Mashatile told the National Council of Provinces that by June this year, municipalities collectively owed waterboards over 25-billion-rand. He said some metros, including Johannesburg and Tshwane in Gauteng, and Mangaung in the Free State, have already settled their debts:
