Joburg cracks down on defaulting tenants

# The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Human Settlements has launched a crackdown on businesses and residents failing to honor rental agreements in the Johannesburg Social Housing Company-owned properties. Mayoral committee member for Human Settlements Mlungisi Mabaso led an operation in the inner city aimed at recovering outstanding debt and addressing illegal occupation and subletting. Several business owners appealed for more time to settle arrears, but officials denied the plea, citing months of non-compliance. He says efforts will continue, although evictions require a court order before occupants are removed.
